On Saturday, 19 May 2012 I took part in the second Hike Fest that was organised by the Dominca Hotel and Tourism Association.
This was a much easier hike for me than the first for 3 reason. First, I had shoes for the whole hike, second it wasn’t as muddy and third it was a lot shorter.
I woke up early at 6am again and they drove us to the start point in Colihault Heights. The buses couldn’t get up to the very start due to the steepness of the mountain so we all got off the bus and most went up on a big red dump truck. I went up in much more comfort sitting in a pick up truck. It took a while to get all 72 of us up the mountain but eventually everyone got up the hill and after the pep talk was given we were all on our way.
This is a beautiful hike going through Segment 10 and part of Segment 11 of the Waitukubuli Trial. Segment 10 starts inColihaut Heights and ends at Syndicate. Here you can than go on to Segment 11 (which we did as part of this hike) or take the Syndicate Trail.
The segments goes through the foothills of Morne Diablotins, Dominica’s tallest mountain. The area passes through beautiful rainforest, lots of farming and is a well known spot to see the Domincan National bird, Sisserou parrot. Despite keeping my eyes open I never did see the bird.
However, I did get to see a bright yellow crab in the jungle. It was a real treat for me as I thought crabs as more of a seaside creature and to see one in the jungle that was so yellow was just awesome.
The only part of the hike I found difficult was at the very end. For about 40mins we had to go a very steep mountain that was angle in a way that a clumsy person like me, was bound to fall. Which I did. It was slick, muddy and I spent a lot of the time grabbing trees and using roots as ropes to hold me so I didn’t fall all the way down. Our hike ended with us going through a banana plantation and finishing up in a town called Picard.
I returned home with mud, one bruise, wet (as it rained for most of the hike) but with some great pictures.

E & I had a loong day today, got up @ 6am to meet 9 other ppl to go Bense Pool where ppl can jump off 5m cliffs or go down a natural waterslide, than BBQ lunch at #1 beach spot (that is its actual name) where this pic was taken & where E got super burnt and ended the night at Jazz Fest where the music wasn’t really jazz but still a grest vibe. Should sleep well tonight (Taken with instagram)
